Environmental Impact Report

By LWC
July 2008

We were successful in obtaining a full Environmental Impact Report (EIR) on the proposed project. An EIR, to objectively acknowledge and explore various impacts presented by the project such as height, bulk, traffic and land use, is prepared by the project’s consultants.

The Draft EIR (DEIR) or preliminary report was completed on May 25, 2008 for a 45-day public review period.

The Melrose Neighborhood Association (MNA) and La Brea Willoughby Coalition (LWC) examined the thousands of pages document along with their own expert team and active neighbors. Their findings included the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) was not followed by the City in preparing the DEIR. When impact areas were not properly addressed or analyzed, the DEIR failed to properly and fully inform citizens and decision makers of the environmental consequences of the project. It further failed to fairly analyze feasible alternatives to the proposed project.

Neighbors were alerted and many voiced their choice of the two alternative developments they considered as much more compatible with our neighborhood.

THANK YOU! NEIGHBORS FOR YOUR TIME AND EFFORTS TO SAVE OUR NEIGHBORHOOD!!

All comments are to be further addressed by the project’s consultants in a Final EIR (FEIR). We remain united and vigilant during the many months this entire process will take and will keep you informed with our progress.

WE REMAIN UNITED IN FIGHT!

LA BREA-WILLOUGHBY COALITION is an organization of concerned homeowners and residents of all social and economic strata who strongly oppose the La Brea Gateway Project.

The Martin Group and Bomel Company have developed the project, a building of seven stories—two commercial, two comprised of 219 residential units, and three above-ground parking area (along with one underground). The rezoning would eliminate yet another piece of fast-disappearing industrial property and jobs — with a devastating effect on the city's economy. The proposed project is completely incompatible with this neighborhood of one- and two-story residences.
